Anti-cult Photo Exhibition Held in HK
2001/02/09

HONG KONG, September 2 (Xinhuanet) -- A three-day "oppose evil  cult and uphold civilization" photo exhibition was opened here  Sunday, drawing more than 1,000 attendees from political, economic, cultural and religious circles of the local community.
Wang Fengchao, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the  Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special  Administrative Region (SAR), said at the opening ceremony that  since its formation in the early 1990s, Falun Gong has led to the  death of 1660 practitioners and innocent people, and caused  innumerous tragedies.
The Chinese government's ban of the cult from July 1999 has won firm support from people home and abroad, Wang said. Over the past two years, he said, authorities at various levels have been  educating Falun Gong followers with patience and care, helping a  large number of practitioner abandon the evil cult and return to  normal life.
The anti-cult exhibition held in Hong Kong will help local  people realize the danger of the evil cult and gain a clearer  understanding of the central government's stance and efforts made  on the Falun Gong issues, Wang said.
Chuang Shih-ping, chairman of the Hong Kong Culture Association, also stressed the necessity of holding such an anti-cult  exhibition in Hong Kong. "It will promote the spirit of science  and civilization in the society and thus contribute to the  maintenance of Hong Kong's long-term stability and prosperity," he said.
Zhang Guoliang, president of the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po  newspaper, said the Falun Gong group in Hong Kong has the same  evil nature as its inland counterparts. Activities of the Falun  Gong group are turning more and more politicized and  internationalized, he said.
The SAR government is keeping a close eye on the Falun Gong  activities, which is a necessary move to protect the right of Hong Kong, Zhang said. He hoped the exhibition would help more people  realize the danger of Falun Gong and voluntarily say no to the  cult.
Also present at the opening ceremony were Jiang Enzhu, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the  Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and Ji Peiding,  commissioner of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR.
The exhibition was co-sponsored by the Hong Kong Cultural  Association and the Hong Kong-based newspaper Wen Wei Po. Some 103 social organizations also joined hands in the preparation for the  exhibition.
The photo show is divided into four main parts, namely, Li  Hongzhi and Falun Gong, the Danger of the Falun Gong Evil Cult,  Eliminate Falun gong Evil Cult and Foster a Cultivated Social  Environment, and Evil Cult is a Threat to All the Human Beings.
More than 600 photos were on show at the exhibition to reveal  the serious damages caused by Falun Gong as well as to demonstrate the Chinese government's efforts in educating Falun Gong followers.
