NPC Chairman Calls for Active Measures for Taking up Challenges

  BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Li Peng, chairman of the Standing
Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), called for
measures to take up challenges and make most of the opportunities
brought about by China's accession to the World Trade Organization
(WTO).    
  Speaking at a group discussion of deputies to the current
annual session of the Ninth NPC from Beijing here Wednesday, Li
said that "we should have a clear understanding of the situation
and work in high spirit to safeguard political stability and unity
and achieve a sustainable, healthy and stable development of the
national economy."
  Li spoke highly of the great changes that have taken place in
Beijing since the implementation of the reform and opening up
policy, especially in recent years. He also praised Beijing's
efforts and contributions in legislation.
  He urged the city to take effective measures to improve local
environment, including the use of clean fuel and development of
environment-friendly vehicles.
  As an international metropolis, Beijing should explore into new
ways of urban management in order to adapt to the new situation,
he said, adding that the city should place community work in an
important place.
